Converting a kitchen, handwashing or utility sink into an emergency eyewash station may appear convenient, but the complete installation must be safe, accessible and ready for immediate use. Poor placement, restricted access or surrounding hazards could create a potential OSHA violation when employees work with corrosive materials.

OSHA requires suitable facilities for quickly flushing the eyes and body when workers may be exposed to injurious corrosive substances. The concern is not simply whether eyewash nozzles are present. The entire station must allow an injured employee to reach it quickly, activate it easily and flush both eyes continuously.

Problems With a Sink-Mounted Eyewash

The pictured sink-mounted eyewash presents several practical concerns.

A large paper-towel dispenser is mounted directly above the sink. An employee with chemicals in their eyes may be unable to see clearly and could strike their head while bending toward or rising from the eyewash. The dispenser also limits the space available for taller employees to position their face over the flushing streams.

The faucet, handles and eyewash tubing are located close together. This can make the controls confusing during an emergency and may prevent the user from positioning both eyes comfortably. A person in pain or panic should not have to determine which faucet handle or diverter activates the eyewash.

The small sink may also provide inadequate splash containment. A 15-minute flush can release several gallons of water. The user’s face and hands can redirect that water outside the basin, creating a wet floor and a slip hazard. In this installation, the sink is beside an open doorway and active walking area, increasing the chance of another employee slipping.

Because the sink is also used for normal handwashing, it may become blocked by soap, paper products, dishes, tools or cleaning supplies. Eyewash nozzles at a multipurpose sink may also be exposed to dirt, grease, soap or other contamination.

Why a Dedicated Wall-Mounted Station Is Often Better

A dedicated wall-mounted 15-minute eyewash station is designed specifically for emergency use. It provides:

  • Clear head and shoulder space
  • Simple, visible activation
  • Hands-free continuous flow
  • Better access to both flushing streams

A wall-mounted unit does not automatically guarantee compliance, but it eliminates many of the hazards created when an ordinary sink is expected to serve two purposes.
